The protagonist, Brian Durston, is a bright young hotshot who left a big New York ad agency, and the fast track to mega bucks, to join his uncle's medium-sized firm. Why? His uncle promised to turn over his stake in the agency. The future looks bright until Brian discovers his uncle slumped on his desk with a bullet through his brain.

WHAT THE CRITICS THOUGHT OF THE BOOK:

“A thrilling and evocative read,” according to Mike Chapman, the Editor-in-Chief of ADWEEK magazine. It’s not just the author’s insider-view of a creative and bustling ad agency that will keep you turning pages. It’s romance, intrigue, and a sinister killer lurking in the shadows. Not only did it win First Place for Fiction from Writer’s Digest, consider what these advertising professions have to say:

“The author lifts the mystery about what goes on inside an ad agency. His characters are real ad people, talking the talk, while murder is added to their list of anxieties.”

—David N. Martin, Founder, The Martin Agency

“ . . . enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the very end. . . . Martin weaves interesting characters together, keeps the plot moving and gives the reader a fun read.”

—Richard E Klein, Principal, Fogarty Klein & Partners

“Stephen Hawley Martin knows the ad business well, but we already knew that. Now we know that he can also write a taut, compelling thriller that keeps the reader guessing from the opening page.”

—O. Burtch Drake, President & CEO, American Association of Advertising Agencies

“A great murder mystery that keeps the reader on the edge of his or her seat, so to speak, until the very end. Finally, a novel about the advertising business that portrays it as it really is. A great read!”

—Ed Eskandarian, Chairman & CEO, Arnold Communications

“Well done!”

—Joseph J. Cronin, President & CEO, Saatchi & Saatchi

It was the end of an era, and the beginning of an ever-evolving world of fast money, fast women, fast talkers...and fast death. Texas was just as noisy, reckless, and wide open in 1914 as it was in the days of the Wild West — with one important exception: success no longer paid off in livable wages, it paid off in millions. Lee Temple, fresh out of a Fort Worth jail and broke, knew that to survive he'd have to give in to change. No sooner had he ditched his saddle than he got caught in a fracas involving the newly rich oil trash Hargroves. There was Harry, the bright, sensitive, but quick-tempered would-be writer he'd befriended; Harry's ruthless, violent father, Cotton; and Elizabeth, Cotton's free-thinking daughter, as beautiful as she was daring...and dangerous. Before long, Lee was riding shotgun for a major Hargrove concern — dodging lies as well as a murderous sniper's bullets in a new kind of business that was as dirty as the grimy black earth from which it was born. Bringing to light the last and most compelling chapter of the American frontier, Wayne Barton and partner Stan Williams are the most exciting and distinctive storytellers writing about the American West.

Charlie and Drake are working a helicopter job in rural Maine when a man approaches and asks for their help. At first glance, it seems he’s just an old man who needs to get to his son’s remote cabin in the woods. But the cabin holds more secrets than Fergus McNab will admit, and it isn’t until Charlie returns to Albuquerque that she discovers they may have just aided and abetted a criminal who has escaped the law back home. The secrets get twistier, the more she looks into the ten-year-old case where Rory McNab, facing a life in prison, seemed to vanish from the reach of the law. Just as Charlie is thinking she should report McNab’s whereabouts, there’s a murder that seems to rock the foundation of the old case. And Charlie is in handcuffs, caught in the middle.

1889 Civil War Story of Battle and Prison, of Peril and Escape - The incidents of the book are real ones, drawn in part from the writer's personal experiences and observations as a soldier of the Union during that war. He is also indebted to many comrades for reminiscences of battle and prison life. The perilous escape of Jed and Dick, from Andersonville down the Flint and Apalachicola Rivers, to the Gulf of Mexico, is in substance the narrative of a comrade whom the writer knew at Andersonville, and afterwards met when the war had closed. The descriptions of the prison are especially truthful, for in them the author briefly tells what he himself saw.
