But help was hundreds of miles away in Denver, and only one man had the courage and strength to accomplish the impossible. If he failed, the Home would perish; if he succeeded, it might be his last act of heroism.

And at forty-two, he’s not sure the third ever will either.

NIGHT WINDS

Read by Henry McNulty

Set in the late 1800’s with plenty of action and humor, Blue Cantor was born in one of the worst brothels along the Texas border. His mother gave him the unusual name of Blue not because of love or affection, it was simply because blue was the color of his eyes. His last memories of her was when he was a child and the day she died in the fire that scarred his face. Blue and Micah became friends when trapping along the Green River. Both men were loners but found they had a lot in common. They were on their own at an early age and had grown to love the untamed wilderness, whether it was scouting for a wagon train or fighting their way out of some of the toughest saloons in the west.

Billy Ray, self-taught itinerate preacher, former hard-working miner and Saturday Night brawler, faces his own temptations in the wilderness of the Old West. Called to be pastor of a divided flock in a frontier town held in the grip of a lawless cattle baron, Billy tries to bring his parishioners together, and repair the abandoned little church in the middle of town. Billy must win his place in a community that “doesn’t want any preacher changing things.” A beautiful mysterious woman crosses Billy’s path, stirring up feelings he not sure he should have “working in the Lord’s pasture.” There’s a fight brewing, and Billy Ray may have to pick up his guns or put up his fists to save himself, his church and the town.

Charlie Roy and pale, skinny Sir Arthur, an English gentleman, arrive at the Crown B ranch north of Cheyenne which is owned by the Sir’s sister, Elizabeth. Elizabeth was widowed the past winter, and left with a ranch that lost nearly all its beef stock from the brutal 86’-87’ winter freeze. Additionally, Elizabeth’s dead husband’s former partner, Justin Harper, is hell-bent on taking over her ranch. But what Harper and his boys don’t figure on is interference by the likes of Charlie, and the fierceness of the Sir. Dead horseflesh and murder won’t deter Charlie and the Sir from what they’ve set out to do, even if they have to fight a range war to do it...

On the pivotal edge of the twentieth century, the beautiful and determined Ivey Rose Grady falls in love with the captain and owner of a steamboat. Things go horribly wrong; not at all as she had wished in her young innocent dreams. Into the story strides her younger brother, Jody Lee, a nearly perfect replica of his grandfather, Jack Grady, only bigger. The young man deals out his own very special brand of justice to those who would harm his beloved sister. The story moves from the Grady farm in the northeast corner of Tennessee to the Oklahoma Indian Territory before statehood. Jody makes a harrowing escape from his pursuers to the sanctuary of the western Cherokee Nation. Here, among the Cherokee, he finds refuge, friendship, and also the woman of his dreams. Meet this assorted cast of gamblers, farmers, killers, lawmen, ranchers, and other memorable characters from turn-of-the-century America. This powerful historical narrative, set against the perilous last western frontier, evokes romance, sorrow, defeat and violence, but also hope and renewal.
