STRUCTOPHIS
By Joseph R. Lallo
Read by Jerry Sciarrio

In a small town in Colorado, Markus Spiros was just getting his life on track. By day he worked as a veterinary tech, by night he took classes. His steady little routine was rolling along nicely when his impulsive Uncle Dimitrios threw a wrench in the works. Thanks to an unannounced trip, Markus had to swing by his uncle’s bistro to tend to the ‘special oven.’ When he arrived, he discovered it wasn’t the oven that was special, it was the rare and exotic egg that had been incubating inside it. And now it had hatched. Suddenly, Markus found his life had become a good deal more complicated. The creature was a Structophis Gastrigae—a strange creature that was equal parts dragon and oven—and she’d become quite a big girl. Large as a refrigerator and curious as a toddler, the creature he’d dubbed Blodgette would have been a handful in any situation. Markus had bigger problems than figuring out how to take care of her, though. Owning such a rare and special beast was illegal, so should the cops learn of it, Markus would be destined for jail. Worse, there were certain unscrupulous people who would do anything to acquire Blodgette. Now, with the help of his old classmate Gale, Markus has to scramble to stay two steps ahead of the authorities and a corrupt CEO, all while being the best ‘mommy’ he can be to his brand new pizza dragon.

Samantha Sweet Series, Book 10
Read by Andrea Bates

When a woman walks into Samantha Sweet’s pastry shop, claiming to have amnesia, it’s a puzzle that seems to have nothing to do with Sam’s new commission for a fantastic one-of-a-kind order of chocolates, although "Jane Doe" seems to know a lot about that. Sam calls Sheriff Beau to solve the mystery of who this stranger is and where she belongs. But Beau’s attention is occupied by other things: nearly his entire force is out sick with some kind of flu bug, and now a murder far from Taos requires his full attention. Nothing is fitting together, until suddenly it does. “Jane’s” forgotten memories become vitally important as Beau and Sam work to piece the puzzle together.

S.O.S.
By Allan Cole
Read by Ben McLean

S.O.S. is a fine WW2-era historical novel (based on Allan Cole’s family experiences) set in Florida, on the “Home Front.” Nazi submarine attacks off the coast are only the start of the problems for local residents. Will humans overcome obstacles in the face of adversity & surely save the day? The author writes: “Between February & May of 1942, German U-boats operated with impunity off the Florida coast, sinking nearly two dozen freighters from Cape Canaveral to Key West & killing 5,000 people. Residents were horrified witnesses of the attacks — the night skies were aflame & in the morning the beaches were covered with oil & tar, ship parts & charred corpses. The Germans even landed teams of saboteurs charged with disrupting war efforts in the factories of the North. This novel is based on those events. For my own purposes, I set the tale in the fictitious town of Juno Beach on the banks of the equally fictitious Seminole River — all in the very real Palm Beach County, a veritable wilderness in those long-ago days. Among the witnesses were my grandfather & grandmother, who operated an orchard & ranch in the area.”

EASY ERRORS
By Steven F. Havill
Bill Gastner Series, Book 12
Read by Rusty Nelson

When the first Posadas County Mystery, Heartshot, published in 1991, Bill Gastner was the county Undersheriff. Over time Bill became Sheriff, then retired, and Robert Torrez took over the top spot. But what were Torrez's first days as a rookie officer like? Terrible!
It's 1986. Undersheriff Bill Gastner is enjoying his usual insomnia alone inside his old adobe when jolted by a horrendous noise. Dreading what he will find, he hastens to the nearby interstate exit where a violent crash has occurred. Not only is the vehicle that struck the support pillars totaled and the driver and a passenger crushed inside, a dead boy has been ejected. As the appalled Gastner recognizes the youth and swings into action, the first deputy to join him at the scene is rookie Robert Torrez, the department's newest hire. Before Gastner can head him off, Torrez sees that the boy is his spirited younger brother. And the girl crushed inside the SUV is a younger sister.
The driver of the Suburban, also dead, is the assistant District Attorney's teenaged son. Two local family tragedies.A shaken couple reports that when the Suburban, careening at nearly 100 miles an hour, passed them on the interstate, activity inside hinted at its occupants' panic. Were the three dead kids running from someone-or something-rather than speeding? Further investigation reveals that a fourth teen should have been in the vehicle but is now missing. Where had the four kids been? And why? It appears they'd lied to their parents. Following his usual meticulous procedure, Gastner traces the vehicle's path to a remote canyon with attractive caves.
The discovery he makes there balloons the case and introduces possible murder. Yet with a lack of witnesses hampering Sheriff Salcido, Gastner, Torrez, and other deputies, errors working the case can too easily be made.
